A Hidden Gem Next to Interlaken
Often overshadowed by the more famous Interlaken, Unterseen is a charming town situated between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. Historically, it was established on land owned by the Interlaken monastery, which resisted the town's development for centuries. Although the rise of tourism in the 19th century brought prosperity to Unterseen, it struggled to secure direct access to the lakes and railway.
Despite this, Unterseen has a rich history, having welcomed notable figures such as Goethe and composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, both of whom were captivated by the town’s unique charm.
A visit to Unterseen wouldn’t be complete without exploring the historic old town, known as the Stedtli. Here, you'll find an impressive row of houses aligned alongside the Aare River, with the striking church tower and castle providing a picturesque backdrop that rivals the stunning mountain panorama.
At the heart of the Stedtli is a rectangular square framed by delicate house facades, featuring the former town hall, which boasts a beautiful chestnut tree-lined avenue in front. This building once served as the center of public life—functioning as a trading post, town hall, and guesthouse.
Crossing the Schaalbrücke bridge from the square leads to the Spielmatten district, once the town's mill district, which now marks the border with Interlaken, alongside the River Aare. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Stedtli, making it an ideal location to appreciate the beauty and history of this often overlooked treasure.
