Explore Interlaken: A Mountain Paradise in the Bernese Oberland
By the early 19th century, Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland had already established itself as a prominent destination, known for its breathtaking mountain scenery. Renowned figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn journeyed through these majestic landscapes.
Interlaken’s ascent as a favored tourist destination was significantly boosted by the completion of the Bernese Oberland Railway in 1890 and the Jungfrau Railway in 1912. Today, it serves as a vacation hotspot and a key location for international conventions, making it an ideal starting point for countless excursions.
With over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts, and ski lifts, visitors have access to an impressive 200 kilometers of ski pistes and an extensive network of hiking trails. Excursion boats, including historic paddle steamers, navigate the tranquil waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, providing picturesque views and relaxing journeys.
From the Interlaken Ost railway station, travelers can easily access the Jungfrau region with trains heading toward Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, offering connections to the railways leading to Mürren, the Schilthorn, and via Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe."
Interlaken also lies along the scenic “Golden Pass” panorama route, which travels from Montreux on Lake Geneva, past the luxury resort of Gstaad, to Interlaken, and then on across the Brünig Pass to Lucerne.
Just ten kilometers away, in the sun-drenched south-facing slopes, lies Beatenberg-Niederhorn—a paradise for paragliders. Additionally, hiking enthusiasts can enjoy an extensive network of trails, while the Niederhorn offers a natural habitat for ibexes, chamois, and marmots.
Interlaken truly embodies the allure of the Alps, inviting adventurers and leisure-seekers alike to experience its stunning beauty and rich history.
