Discover Interlaken: A Jewel of the Bernese Oberland
By the early 19th century, Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland had already gained notoriety for its stunning mountain scenery. Esteemed figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn journeyed through these majestic landscapes, captivated by their beauty.
Interlaken’s rise as a premier tourist destination was further solidified with the completion of the Bernese Oberland Railway in 1890 and the Jungfrau Railway in 1912. Today, it serves as an essential vacation spot and an international convention hub, making it the perfect starting point for a multitude of excursions.
With over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts, and ski lifts, visitors enjoy access to an impressive 200 kilometers of ski pistes, alongside a vast network of hiking trails. Excursion ships, including historic paddle steamers, navigate the serene waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, providing delightful tours with breathtaking views.
From the Interlaken Ost railway station, travelers can embark on journeys to the Jungfrau region, heading toward Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, with convenient connections to the railways leading to Mürren and the Schilthorn, as well as to the Jungfraujoch via Kleine Scheidegg. A fleet of ships including one historic paddle steamer on each lake enables scenic cruises on Lakes Thun and Brienz.
Interlaken is also situated on the renowned “Golden Pass” panorama route, which stretches from Montreux on Lake Geneva, passes through the luxury resort of Gstaad, and continues to Interlaken before crossing the Brünig Pass to Lucerne.
Just ten kilometers away, Beatenberg-Niederhorn offers a sunny south-facing slope, creating a paradise for paragliders. Hikers will appreciate the extensive network of trails in the area, which also serves as a habitat for wildlife such as ibexes, chamois, and marmots.
Interlaken truly embodies the allure of the Swiss Alps, inviting both adventurers and leisurely travelers to immerse themselves in its breathtaking beauty and rich history.
